"Bill, It may not be the size of the territory that's the challenge - rather as the other reply mentioned, it's about the quality / price and demand for your product line.  You also have to consider one other magical word…"

Dental Sales Rep replied to Bill Clark's discussion How large of an area can a dealer rep effectively cover?
"Wow, that is a tough one Bill.  I think it would really depend on the depth of your product line and what you and your company are trying to be.  A Patterson, Benco, Schein, Burkhart that has almost everything a dentist could use may focus…"

How large of an area can a dealer rep effectively cover?

I will soon be hiring 2 or 3  reps in Illinois, to be calling on individual dental offices. I have a line of consumable and disposable products, that a motivated person could sell into other non-dental specialties as well. I understand that territory size, density, and population are all things that must be considered. I would like to make the areas as large as possible, so the reps can make a good living. But I would also want to make sure that each area is being completely covered. I think we…See More

Mary Fadhl replied to Bill Clark's discussion How do I compensate an Independant Rep?
"Interesting question especially in light of mentioning "1/2 states." This makes me assume the company is considering direct representation. Frankly, consumables and disposables are dominated by dealers and this is who the staff looks to…"

Mike Maturen replied to Bill Clark's discussion How do I compensate an Independant Rep?
"It partially depends on whether the product is sold direct, or through distribution. In the past 4 months, I have looked at several independent opportunities. All of them paid straight commission, ranging from 10% to 20%. None paid any expenses,…"

How do I compensate an Independant Rep?

Can anyone tell me how an independant rep is normally compensated? I am wanting to hire reps to handle 1/2 states, and would like to hear what would be considered to be a fair, to better than fair deal. I have a line of consumables and disposables. Located in Illinois.

"What days does everyone feel are the most productive days for cold calling dental offices? I am curious to see if there is a big difference of opinion. Does this change during different times of the year?"

"Hi Mike! I may be looking for someone to represent a limited line of disposables in your area. I am not sure what I am looking for, or whether it could be worth your efforts. Might be worth exploring? Bill Clark (tatsales@aol.com)"
