What should the US government do to stimulate the economy? What can be done to stimulate the global economy?

The US government has spent a lot of money with the stimulus plan, but it has done very little to stimulate much of anything.  I thought DSP members may have some BETTER ideas?  How do we get the economy kick started?

To our friends in other countries, just about every country that we know of is feeling this global recession, depression, whatever you want to call it.  What can be done?

I think we need to worry less about the global economy and fix the U.S. economy. Jobs, Jobs, Jobs! We must keep them and create them. Without jobs, people don't spend or go to the dentist for that matter.

Simple plan:

Give tax incentives for any company that keeps jobs in the U.S.
Penalize (in the form of taxes) companies that send jobs out of the U.S.

Thoughts?

I have to first ask who told you that the stimulus didn't stimulate much of anything? If it was FOX then I suggest you consult a legit source. Fact is the stim plan is only partially enacted and the hand wringing about the expenditures are only about a fractional segment of the funds actually released. Much is in reserve, much was used in lieu of unemployment payments that would have been funded anyway, and much is recouped in taxes collected on the increased velocity of money which is the cure for the recession...eventually.
As for jobs, yes we need jobs but we need the right jobs. Think of it as a business, if we were all in personnel the business would fail. If we were all in sales the business will fail. If we were all in legal...you know. What we need back is manufacturing jobs. Manufacturing and exporting leads to all the other jobs getting funded. A dentist in Michigan is in trouble because the auto industry tanked and nothing took it's place. If everyone in Michigan now becomes a healthcare worker we have jobs but no source of funding except the government and old auto industry retirement benefits.
The next driver of the new American economy has not yet developed. It will and the economy will take off once again. At the time we know where to channel the stimulus funds that are in the wings, we will still have funds to pump into the economy.
One last thought. Does anyone but me miss the old Post Office? Why not take it back into Federal control and massage it back to life. Also take military pensions out of postal costs (yeah a stamp pays some military retirement pensions). An affordable mailing cost will stir jobs across the jobs spectrum not to mention actual postal workers.
I'm done. Thanks.
According to this recent poll, The American people don't think that the stimulus has created jobs. Check out the poll done by CBS/New York Times under the header Stimulus and Jobs. Certainly a different type of source than Fox. Not that we are trying to be political here:)
