Pittsburgh Sales Rep - Tough Market?
I have worked in dental assisting, dental sales and dental management and am now looking for a sales rep position. I have been checking with the bigger dental supply companies as well as the smaller ones, and am having a very tough time finding a position based out of Western PA. Am I in a bad/saturated market, or are all territories experiencing the same stagnant market for sales reps?
Also, for those already working as a sales rep - how did you find your way in? I have been submitting resumes when I find open positions, but I was wondering if anyone had any other tips...

Hate to say it, but the industry is not hiring like it used to. Hope that things will get better soon. I don't think Western PA is any different than anywhere else right now.

Hi Stephanie.
It always helps to have an "in". What connections do you have within your network that might be able to facilitate a conversation with the companies that you're targeting? There may not be a position open immediately, but an informal interview with the local management team might help make you top of mind when they do start hiring. It took me over six months worth of beating doors down to get the position I wanted.

I was an assistant as well--I got to be good buddies with my Benco rep. who called on us. One day he told me about an opportunity and asked if I were interested-and the the rest is history. I would say network with any reps you might have known that called on you while you were assisting--even if in another state right now. I think a major part of getting in is who you know. Good luck!
