iZUP is an application for your BlackBerry, Android and other smartphones. What does it do? Well it senses if your vehicle is in motion and will not let you receive or make phone calls or send or receive text messages. Think it is just for teens...think again. How about companies using it to lower their insurance costs and possibly save their employee's lives.

How many phone calls or text do you receive or send while you are driving?

Yes, there are also people who can't walk and chew gum at the same time!!! So do we ban walking, or put a use tax on chewing gum?

If you use poor judgment using your phone while driving, why should I be penalized? We have all seen folks eating, shaving, applying makeup, drinking, smoking, having sex, fighting, etc, etc, etc, while driving. All states have laws against "distracted driving" we would do well to just enforce the laws we have, not come up with software or new laws to prevent these activities.

Cell phones behind the wheel can be dangerous, sadly many folks lack good judgment and deserve to be cited. Like so many things if the laws that are already on the books were enforced.........
I think you hit the nail on the head. Some people don't use good judgement. With all the driving we do as dental sales reps it is the by far the most dangerous thing we do when it comes to our jobs.
To your point here is a new release states get tougher on distracted drivers. http://www.pciaa.net/LegTrack/web/NAIIPublications.nsf/lookupwebcon...
I have used a headset or speaker setup with my cell in the car since the earths crust was still cooling. Seriously, despite reports that say they make little difference a head set makes the phone much safer. Besides the headset;
1. A mount on the dash so that your phone is in your line of vision while you are watching the road.
2. Speed dial numbers to make it simple to dial your most frequent calls. IE office, spouse, best accounts, etc.
3. Saved the best for last; don't take your eyes off the road for more than a very few seconds, if I have to dial a number I dial the first three digits, the next three digits, and the final 4 digits.

The key to staying alive behind the wheel with a cell phone (or other distractions) is to NEVER take your eyes of the road for more than a couple of seconds. MAX

Consider how much ground your car covers at 60 MPH. That is of course 1 mile per minute. 1 Mile=5,280 feet. Thus you are covering approx. 9 feet per second. If the car in front of you stands on their brakes if you are distracted for more than a couple of seconds, you are toast. It's really that simple. Use good judgment, if you are flying along the freeway bumper to bumper at 70 (think S. Cal) it's not a good time to make a phone call.
Be careful out there.
How does this work if I'm the passenger? What about emergencies? This does not seem to be a logical solution to the problem of operating a phone while driving. I think all automobiles should have a breathalyzer installed to prevent drunk driving. If "they" want to save lives, start with the most dangerous problem!
Anthony:
I would not want to have to pay for that breathalyzer, nor would anyone else who is responsible and does not drive after drinking. Again, how about we enforce the laws we have, and PUNISH the offender. IF the US would follow the lead of Europe and seriously PUNISH the offender, we would not have that death toll. Drunken drivers should go to prison for the offense. It's that simple. We are too soft on this issue, look at the way some other countries handle this, it ain't rocket science.
