The Dental Sales Professional's Online Resource -------- KNOW MORE EARN MORE

I am very new to the dental sales field (othodontics) and would like to know if the base pay and comission percentage is appropriate. Is there a standard? Also, what expenses should I take on, versus my employer. One more thing, if I am a tremendous help at a convention/show (ie, can speak a second language, like spanish, pretty good, great at math, great product knowledge), should I get any comission on those sales, and if so, how does that normally work?

Well, I will take a stab at this.  My guess is that being in ortho sales you are selling direct to the end user.  Base is probably around 60K with the ability to make about 25K in bonus/commission.  As far as expenses...that really depends on the company, but should compensate you for auto, cell, travel and ent, laptop, etc.

As far as help at a convention, not likely you will get much out of that except the hotel points.  Some companies will give spiffs based on sales at the booth, but haven't seen that lately.

Dear Maintainpositive,

Congratulations on your entry into the best industry around! Dentistry, including orthodontics, is a fantastic place to grow your skills, establish yourself as a talented player and earn a good living for yourself and your family.

One of the ways our company helps dental sales teams excel is to assist them in finding and recruting top talent. In the past 20 years, I have seen many different types of compensation structures from dental companies. Generally, the most common are those that are performance based compensation models. Most dental companies offer a base salary then some sort of additional compensation incentive. This can be in the form of bonus, commission or profit sharing.

You will find dental companies offer a wide range of earning ranges, I find that the more technical knowledge required (both product and sales) the higher the compensation potential. Of course, that's what most of us love about sales is that most sales positions allow us to earn as much as we desire by simply selling MORE! The key is you earn more when you provide more value...to your customers and to your company. Your post says you are new to the dental industry but does not say if you are new to selling. This may play a part in your compensation. I will be happy to share what I know about salary/compensation ranges. Contact me directly at Coach@ANSIRinternational.com or 480-323-6909.

As far as trade shows are concerned, most companies offer an extra incentive for helping them achieve their trade show goals. The key here is payment is provided for performance--not just showing up. Given your good attitude, enthusiasm and extra talents, I'd expect you are well prepared to enjoy additional incentives at any trade show!

Hope this helps!
