Yes--but the new 3m Lava system is better. Check it out!
Bye Bye I-Tero...
Yep, they are still out there. Saw the I Tero going to town in a 5 dentist practice a couple weeks back.
Yes. ITero has recently gone from a direct company to working with 3 Distributors; Benco, Burkhardt, and Schein. They are also opening their architecture to work with many of the lab scanners out there, and that will increase their business.

We are working with Lava COS, e4D, and Cerec here at THE DENTAL ADVISOR. Happy to answer any questions for anyone on this ever changing topic!
Don't those same dealers also carry the Lava COS? Would love some info. on the basic differences of these systems.
Yes, they do. Basic difference: capturing of the digital impression, the way the models are made, and the fees for participating. We are doing digital workflow training here for sales reps to discuss all of the differences between systems, as we have a lab, milling center and busy dental practice all on our "campus". It's been great sharing all of the work we are doing. I'd encourage anyone with questions to visit us, or submit questions online at www.dentaladvisor.com, under ask the editors. We'll respond to you personally within 48 hours.

COS uses a movie type capture, where I tero is a point and click type scan. Both provide instant 3D modeling on the screen. COS sends the scan to a central milling center, where stereolithographic (layered) models are made for the laboratory. ITero sends the scan to a central milling center, where milled models are made for the laboratory. Both companies allow laboratories to purchase margin marking software so that the laboratory can view the digital impressions and "approve" them before the models are made. If a lab does not invest in the software, they can work with a design center to mark margins prior to them being sent to the milling center. In both cases, a working model is returned to the laboratory where any type of restoration can be made (PFM, Gold, Zirconia, All-Ceramic). The 3M Lava system uses Lava Zirconia as a substructure. The Itero system can utilize an open architecture mill to fabricate a zirconia coping.

Each system has a per click fee to send scans, and a model fee for the laboratories. There are various deals out there from all sides.

Those are the basics...confused yet? :) I invite all to visit our CAD/CAM corner on our website for more information. It's free to view with a registered email on our site.
I'm sure you have checked out the new Cerec AC system..what's your opinion as to what system works best and is more cost evvective...the info you provided on the Lava and Itero is very good..thnx
Hi Ed, we are working with Sirona currently, and we hope to have some data on AC very soon. As far as what's best, and cost effective, the first question is whether or not a doctor is a candidate for chairside scan and mill or chairside scan only. Once they make the decision about what they would like to do, there are differences between the systems. I'd defer to the clinicians I work with as to what works best in each situation, but I've heard them speak positively about Cerec and e4D, each having their own strengths for different cases. AC looks really interesting, so we will have to see how it performs clinically. Glad the info helped, happy to answer anything else we can!
