About time someone had some balls to answer this....the only problem ios that too many manufacturers just want to sell in this economic state at any cost....and a number of dental delaers are meeting their quotas and then buying grey at a much lower price to increase their profit line!
I think that someone from Patterson, Schein, Benco, Burkhardt, DHPI and any other dealer that is authorized to sell these products in North America should present this to each and every one of their vendor partners and ask them what they are going to do to stop this.
These are some of the top name in disposables....if we allow this you know that what will follow next will be equipment!

heres a link to the one of the better topics on this with over 50 comments when DI posted this over 2 years ago....
thanks for posting the above info i was running out of grey connections in the market

Thanks for the referral!
Unfortunately, everyone is being educated to be cheap nowadays.....we are all trying to find a way to make more money.....I have students at a show always asking for samples, even demanding them, they tell me the big companies can afford to give away products so they can "test" it , we need to rethink our approach and get real with the way we do business.

If we want to support the manufacturers, so they can make great products, we need to ensure our sales are better identified. We all have the tools in a computer to use to identify when, how where they buy items. We do not spend the time to use that effectively enough.
It is true however that grey marketing was created by the manufacturers, together we must ensure that we decide how we sell our customers....long term or short-term committment....make fast money and run or decide if we have a customer to help and cultivate.

If you think you can sell cheaper than the others, boy are you wrong, there is always someone who will sell less than you. You have to remember that you are not only selling items, but you, your value, your service and your knowledge!
I thought there was a large grey market website that operates out of Canada. Anyone know about this?
Yes there is an international company in Toronto (that has at least 3 trading names) selling to the big dealers(Schein, Patterson etc) along with some smaller ones, once the large dealers get their minimums filled with the authorized manufacturers, they make more money buying grey...
Thanks for the reposting of my blog post...I think it is very important especially in these economic times. Let me say that 3M/ESPE is the only major company that I know of that is making an effort to minimize gray market and educate the dental community about gray market products. So kudos to them, but, in most cases, upper management at all of these companies is paid on out the door sales...that means everything that leaves the facility whether is is for U.S. distribution or overseas distribution. So there is not an incentive to stop the gray market products.

In any case, it seems that in the last couple of years it has gotten worse and more and more of these guys are popping up all over the place selling nothing but gray market goods.

I believe that the gray market truly exploded when Dentsply cut off those 172 dealers and it continued when Kerr started limiting distribution.

Just my .02

DSP - Like the new look of the site....2 thumbs up
Hi everyone,

I agree with Dental Insider regarding 3M. When I was in Dental Sales my 3M rep gave me a very impressive presentation on grey market and black market products. I felt very well informed when I went into the field, and actually managed to use the information to bring a couple of my customers back from grey market products.

Everybody wants to save money, but no dentist wants to think about what would happen to his practice if one of his patients had a bad reaction to a product that he was not supposed to be using.
Which company has the most grey market material out there?
I dont think there are any hard stats on this but I would say Eastman Kodak film is the #1 product on the gray market. 3M, Kerr and Dentsply would all be tied at #2
