Stefan,

Do you know the % of hygienists using piezo techonology vs. ultrasonic scalers? Have heard that the trend is away from ultrasonics, but they still are the most popular scaling system.

Hi DSR:

Both piezoelectric and magnetostrictive (Cavitron) are considered to be ultrasonic, versus an air sonic scaler handpiece (such as MTI, etc.). In some cases, the choice depends on the application. Also, many professionals tend to gravitate toward the equipment style on which they learned their craft.

Ahhh, as you can tell I was never a hygienist. THX

There are a lot of new piezo & 30kHz units hitting the market, my preference being with optics. But newer is not necessarily better. 25kHz magnetostrictives can actually be better if the patient has heavy calculus or even in a veterinary application. Since the inverse of frequency is lamba/wavelength, you actually get a longer stroke from the older units. They just don't make them like they used to. But the rate of innovation is bringing out some great ideas. I saw one tip that was plastic and safe for implants, pretty cool stuff!

Why are there new piezo units being developed and very few (if any) new magnetostrictives hitting the market. Is the trend away from magnetostrictives.

It seems like that are many more magnetostrictive units out there than piezo.
